Wat is Port? Er zijn zo'n 25.000 wijnboeren. Ze verkopen hun oogst grotendeels aan de grote porthuizen. Deze maken de Port wijn. De Porthuizen hebben meestal ook hun eigen wijn-goederen, de Quinta's. Port dankt zijn naam aan de stad Porto, waar de meeste wijnhuizen hun hoofdvestiging hebben. De stad ligt zo'n 70 km. ten westen van de Douro valleij waar de druiven voor de port vandaan komen.
Vintage Port is de beste kwaliteit port. Het is wijn met jaartal dus uit één jaar. Alleen in de beste oogstjaren en van wijn afkomstig uit de beste wijngaarden worden vintage ports gemaakt. Een vintage port kan zeer lang rijpen. Na een rijpingstijd van twee tot drie jaar in vaten, wordt deze port gebotteld. Hij ontwikkelt zich verder op fles. Deze port kan meestal heel lang worden bewaard en vormt veel depot. 20 of meer % alcohol.
Late Bottled of LBV is port uit één oogstjaar, die na vier tot zes jaar op fles wordt gebracht. Deze LBV is lichter van kleur en body dan een vintage en kan zodra deze in de winkel ligt worden gedronken.
Colheita is de derde vintage-variant De vatrijping van deze wijn is ten minste zeven jaar.
Blended Ports zijn op vat gerijpt en ontwikkelen zich niet verder in de fles. Meestal 19% alcohol. We onderscheiden: Ruby, Tawny, Vintage Character en Crusted Port
Ruby is het jongste type rode port, is krachtig en fruitig. De meeste porthuizen laten deze port drie jaar rijpen.
Daarnaast zijn er Tawny ports. Vaak een mengsel van rode en witte port. Ook zijn er gerijpte Tawny ports. De beste Tawnys krijgen hun smaak en licht bruine kleur door het langdurig rijpen op houten vaten.
Vintage Character port lijkt op een vintage port. Maar het is een blend van verschillende jaargangen, terwijl de wijn vier tot vijf jaar op fust rijpt. b.v.: Churchill Vintage character
Crusted Port is een port die een "korst", dwz depot, in de fles vormt. Een goede port die een blend is van verschillende jonge wijnen, vroeg op fles gebotteld.
